The interaction between the processing of mineral waste, the provision of our own landfill capacities, the extraction of raw materials from our own opencast mine and our own fleet of vehicles leads to valuable synergies within the Stork Group. The mineral residues from slag processing that are not recycled can be deposited at the company's own DK I landfill site. Sand and gravel from the Riesengrund open-cast mine is marketed from the same location and transported to Stork-Tiefbau construction sites using the company's own fleet of vehicles.
The cavity created in opencast mining does not remain unused. It will be developed as a landfill as part of the reutilization process and will be available as valuable landfill space for future generations.
The landfill comprises three approved construction phases. The first construction phase, including the infrastructure and ancillary facilities, was put into operation on 16.05.2022. The landfill areas in the first construction phase will be continuously expanded over the next few years.
The open-cast mine covers an area of approx. 65 ha, 1/3 of which is currently excavated. Here, too, there is sufficient raw material available for the coming decades.
100 % self-sufficient
Thanks to a PV system on the roof, the DK I Erxleben Riesengrund landfill is completely self-sufficient and supplies itself with electricity. Thanks to electricity storage, this is also possible in bad weather.
